Longe dos cientistas achar que a ciência é o único modo de conhecer o mundo e as pessoas, ou que a ciência está sempre certa. Muito ao contrário, seria absurdo não dar lugar às artes, aos mitos e às religiões como instrumentos complementares de conhecimento, expressões de como o mundo é visto por pessoas e culturas muito diversas entre si.
Um mundo sem esse tipo de conhecimento não científico seria um mundo menor e, na minha opinião, insuportável. O que existe é uma distinção entre as várias formas de conhecimento, distinção baseada no método pertinente a cada uma delas. A confusão começa quando uma tenta entrar no território da outra, e os métodos passam a ser usados fora de seus contexto.
Portanto, é (ou deveria ser) inútil criticar a astrologia por ela não ser ciência, pois ela não é. Ela é uma outra forma de conhecimento. [...]
Essa caracterização da astrologia como não ciência não é devida ao dogmatismo dos cientistas. É importante lembrar que, para a ciência progredir, dúvida e erro são fundamentais. Teorias não nascem prontas, mas são refinadas com o passar do tempo, a partir da comparação constante com dados. Erros são consertados, e, aos poucos, chega-se a um resultado aceito pela comunidade científica.
A ciência pode ser apresentada como um modelo de democracia: não existe o dono da verdade, ao menos a longo prazo. (Modismos, claro, existem sempre.) Todos podem ter uma opinião, que será sujeita ao escrutínio dos colegas e provada ou não. E isso tudo ocorre independentemente de raça, religião ou ideologia. Portanto, se cientistas vão contra alguma coisa, eles não vão como donos da ve rd ad e, mas com o mesmo ce t ic ism o que caracteriza a sua atitude com relação aos próprios colegas. Por outro lado, eles devem ir dispostos a mudar de opinião, caso as provas sejam irrefutáveis.

A astrologia está conosco há 4.000 anos e não irá embora. E nem acho que deveria. Ela faz parte da história das ideias, foi fundamental no desenvolvimento da astronomia e é testemunha da necessidade coletiva de conhecer melhor a nós mesmos e os que nos cercam. De minha parte, acho que viver com a dúvida pode ser muito mais difícil, mas é muito mais gratificante. Se erramos por não saber, ao menos aprendemos com os nossos erros e, com isso, crescemos como indivíduos. Afinal, nós somos produtos de nossas escolhas, inspiradas ou não pelos astros.
