Globalization’s advantages and drawbacks
Some specialists and economists say that globalization is much like fire. Fire itself is neither good nor bad. Used properly, it can cook food, sterilize equipment, give form to iron objects and heat our homes. Used carelessly, fire can destroy lives, towns and forests in an instant. Globalization, according to them, works in the same way.
Globalization has dangers and an ugly side, especially regarding income concentration and abuse of economic power. But it can also bring tremendous opportunities and benefits. Just as capitalism requires a network of governing systems to keep it from devouring societies, globalization requires vigilance and the rule of law.
Globalization will always have cheerleaders who are blind to the destruction it can cause especially to poorer countries and less fortunate social classes. And it will always have strong opponents blind to the way globalization gives some people their first opportunity to fulfill basic aspirations. But in the end, globalization is something to mold, shape and manage for the benefit of everyone.
