While some knowledge of morphology is required in order to divide syllables in English, no one needs to have it for this purpose, since syllable division is not common in English. Not even word processors are programmed to do that! The important thing is to know how many syllables a word has, and where the stress falls. And that is a much easier task to accomplish.
In Portuguese, the number of syllables a word has usually equals the number of vowels letters; that is, we practically pronounce all the letters we write. In English, the number of syllables equals the number of vowels sounds, because we don’t pronounce all letters we write.
