Consulting R. S. Crenshaw, Jr., in the book “Naval Shiphandling”, in order to remember some techniques about mooring a destroyer to a buoy, a pilot made a list with the following procedures:

I. stop the engines at 200 yards from the buoy, pass the buoy line and messenger to the boat, and send the boat out ahead with the buoy line.

II. use a buoy hook for securing buoy line, as necessary.

III. never allow the ship to get between the buoy and the boat.

IV. use the engines and helm to twist the bow downwind and slightly short of the buoy, when making a buoy crosswind or crosscurrent.
