It has only been seven years since Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai (1) the Taliban by writing an anonymous diary about life under its rule in north-west Pakistan. She (2) under a pen name she had adopted - Gul Makai, the name of a heroine from a Pashtun folk tale. Since then she has been shot by the extremists, and has become the first teenage ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. For the first few years of her life, her hometown (3) a popular tourist spot. However, the area began to change. As a child, she became an advocate for girls' education, which resulted in the Taliban issuing a death threat against her. In 2012, a gunman shot her. Malala narrowly survived, and (4) to speak out on the importance of education. In 2014, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and became the first teenager ever to become a Nobel Laureate. Speaking ahead of the ceremony in Oslo, Norway the then 17-year-old girl said she hoped to pursue a career in politics after finishing her education in the UK, where she has lived.
