In Second Language Acquisition one of the topics discussed by Rod Ellis are the differences between errors and mistakes. From the various features presented we can consider as appropriate:

Errors are made by students who do not pay enough attention to the task performed while mistakes are result of what the students have not learned yet.

Errors are lapses in performance caused by inability to perform what the students know. Mistakes are usually omissions of information because the student is not sure about the answer.

Mistakes can be classified as caused by omission, misinformation, misordering or overgeneralization.

Errors are made because the student does not know what is correct and mistakes occur because the learner is unable to perform what he/she knows.
