09 their homes in the fires, the organization’s current CEO, Bill Kramer, and president, Janet Yang,
10 have reiterated in a statement that the Oscars will still go ahead as planned on Sunday, March
11 2, from 7 p.m. Eastern Time. However, should the situation in Los Angeles worsen, this could,
12 of course, change. There will be delays on other fronts, though. The nominations were shifted
13 twice and will be revealed on Thursday, the 23rd, at 8:30 a.m. The announcement will be
14 broadcast as usual, though this time without any press in the audience. As a result, the voting
15 window for nominations has been extended until January 17. Meanwhile, the annual Oscar
16 nominees’ luncheon has been canceled, though nominees may still be invited to smaller dinners
17 with their fellow contenders closer to the show itself. The final round of Oscars voting will take
18 place between February 11 and 18.
19 The 2025 Oscars will inevitably feel different from previous shows. Kramer and Yang’s
20 recent statement about the ceremony suggests that, much like the Grammys, the Oscars could
21 serve as a telethon of sorts, working to raise funds for those affected by the fires and those who
22 continue to fight them. Taking the reins from Jimmy Kimmel, who oversaw proceedings in 2023
23 and 2024, will be the beloved comedian Conan O’Brien. “We are thrilled and honored to have the
24 incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year,” Kramer and Yang said in an
25 accompanying statement. “He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film
26 with his brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to
27 connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best—honor the
28 spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.” Against the backdrop of the current crisis, O’Brien
29 will, naturally, have to ensure that he strikes the right tone.
30 It’s too early to say who will perform at the 2025 Oscars, though there’s a chance that
31 Emilia Pérez star Selena Gomez could be among the performers, for her impassioned rendition
32 of “Mi Camino” from that mind-boggling cartel musical, as could Elton John with “Never Too Late”
33 from his documentary of the same name, as well as the raucous Irish rap trio Kneecap with “Sick
34 in the Head” from their head-spinning self-titled film. On the other hand, the Academy could also
35 choose to do away with performances entirely, to establish a more somber mood. With the
36 ceremony just a month and a half away, the 2025 Oscar race is still, remarkably, wide open.
