Cataphora is the omission of words that are understood from the context, such as in: "John likes coffee, and Mary [likes] tea."

It refers to the use of a pronoun to refer back to an entity already mentioned in the text, as in: "Mary went to the park. She was happy."

Cataphora is the repetition of the same word at the beginning of successive clauses to create rhythm, as in: "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds."

It creates cohesion by using words from the same semantic field, such as "car", "driver", "road", and "traffic", without using pronouns.

Cataphora occurs when a pro-form (such as a pronoun) precedes the lexical unit to which it refers, creating suspense or focusing attention on the upcoming information, as in: "When he arrived home, John went straight to sleep."
