9/11: Ten years later
Attacks indelibly market American pyche
The day in crystalline sunlight and endlessly in blue skies but soon whipsawed into a decade of war, economic meltdown and deep political division.
Ten years after Islamic terrorists hijacked passenger jets and crashed them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sep. 11, 2001, the American that emerged from the smoke and rubble was in some ways a very different country.
How different?
Fisrt, a story: it's said that when President Richard Nixon made his groundbreaking visit to Communist China in 1972, he asked Premier Zhou Enlai what he thought about the French Revolution.
It's unclear whether Zhou thought Nixon was aking about the political upheaval of 1789 or the Paris student demonstrattions just hour years earrlier. In case he replied: "Too soon to tell".
It might be soon to fully understand the impact of 9/11 as well.
Did it somehow help spark the Arab Spring because our response unleashed so much upheaval in the Middle East?
Or the tea party, which harnessed an anxiety that America had lost control of events and turned that intoan intimidating political force?
It was easier to gauge the fallout on the day itself. From the moment of impact, the terrorist struck not only concrete and steel but the notion of American might and invincibility.
From crowded to one-stoplight towns, from farmsteads to factories and across the rugged spaces where the singular character of American has been mythically chiseled and shaped, the nation held its collective breath.
Perhaps we still do.

Greece to set up caretaker govt
Multi- party govt set streer troubled nation but opposition leader snubs plans
Greece began yesterday the process of forming a multi- party interim government to break a political impasse that has hamstrung efforts to bail out its debt- stricken economy.
Just hours after surviving a confidence vote in Parliament, Prime Minister George Papandreou met president Karolos Papoulia to set in motion a process that would see a caretaker government shepherd Greece's latest international bailout deal, and pave the way dor early elections by February next year.
"My aim is to immediately create a government of cooperation", Mr. Papandreou told the president in the presence of reporters before the two leaders held talks before closed doors.
"A lack of consensus would woory our European patners about our country's membership of the euro zone, " he said. Consensus is the one and only way".
But his offer was snubbed by oposotion leader Antonis Samaras.
"We have not asked forn any place in his government. All we want is for Mr. Papandreou to resign because he has become dangerous for the country. We insist on immediate elections, " Mr.Samaras said in a televised address.
"Our offer remains on the table, " he added, without saying if he would join talks to form a national unity government.
Mr. Samaras also said he would accept the bailout plan, but not the additional austerity measures Mr. Papandreou says would need to accompany it.
Greek lawmakers sparred late into the night on Friday ahead on the confidence vote. When the votes were cast yesterday morning, all 153 Socialists came out in favour of Mr. Papandreou and 145 voted against him

A Reminder on Maintaining Bone Health
Is fear, ignorance or procrastination putting you at risk of a devastating bone fracture?
Most of the news about osteoporosis concerbs the side effects os current therapies and preventives. But it is important to put these effects in perpective- and to focus on treatment benefits and pratical measures that can help to prevent costly and debilitating fractures in fragile bones.

Osteoporosis is both underdiagnosed and undertreated. Doctor say it is underdiagnosed because many who have it fail to get a bone desity test, sometimes even after they suffer a fracture. The condition is undertreated because some people avoid drug therapy for fear of side effects, while others take their medications erratically or stop taking them altogether without consulting their doctors.

Is is easy to understand the prevailing concern. People hear about drug sid effects like osteonecrosis, or bone death, of the jaw (extremely rare and mostly in cancer patients) and unusual fractures of the thigh bone. They hear that supplements of bone -building calcium cam increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Some 10 milion Americans heve osteoporosis, and 34 milion more with low bone mass are at risk of developing it. It is a silent disease that typically first shows up as low-trauma fracture of the hip, spine or wrist. Low-trauma does bot mean no trauma; someone with healthy bones who falls from a standing height or less is unlikely to break a bone, according to Dr. Sundeep Khosla, president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

While women are the far more frequent victims of osteoporosis and develop it at a younger age, men -espeally those over 70- are also at risk and even less likely than women to have the disease diagnosed an treated.
