Cherries may prove more effective than aspirin in relieving pain, according to Muraleedharan Nair at Michigan State University in East Lansing. His study found that 20 cherries contained between 12 and 25 milligrams of anthocyanins, the chemicals that make cherries red, and they were ten times more powerful at inhibiting inflammatory enzymes as aspirin. Nair is experimenting with the idea of converting the anthocyanins into a tablet form. Meanwhile, he says, “ If a person can consume around twenty cherries, that’s enough dosage to act like one or two aspirin a day”.

Os homens sempre procuraram globalizar seus conhecimentos. Primeiro, por meio da descoberta, da exploração e da cartografia de todo o planeta. Depois, com as grandes viagens. Com armas e mercadorias, tentaram-se conquistar as regiões recém-descobertas do mundo. Depois, as conquistas se deram por meio dos capitais e das idéias. A Igreja a fez com os missionários. A CNN a fez através de sua rede de TV. E o Brasil, por suas novelas. Hoje, temos tudo isso junto. Há todas as formas de globalização anteriores e temos que acrescentar que, pela primeira vez, há um “país” hegemônico, que tem seu exército em todo o planeta.
Pela primeira vez, saímos de duas guerras mundiais. Pela primeira vez, saímos de uma guerra fria, pela primeira vez temos os meios de comunicação de massa. Com isso tudo, a globalização política passou a ser econômica e agora está se tornando psicológica. Temos dados desconcertantes: 32 milhões de pessoas por hora consomem Coca-Cola; 18 milhões de pessoas comem por hora um hambúrguer do McDonald’s. Somos globalizados em tudo. Não só a economia foi globalizada. Nossa personalidade e nossos sentidos também. Vemos em qualquer lugar os mesmos filmes. Ouvimos em qualquer lugar a mesma música. Todos os aeroportos do mundo têm o mesmo cheiro. Vivemos em uma globalização psicológica, que, de um lado, transforma o mundo numa grande vizinhança e mescla as experiências, mas, de outro, aniquila as diferenças. E aniquilar as diferenças é terrível.

In China the government is fighting to save a national symbol – the giant panda. There are very few pandas today and they are running a big risk of extinction.
Pandas are vegetarians. They live in the mountains of central China, in forests of pine trees and bamboo. Pandas eat flowers, grass, and sometimes small animals and honey. But bamboo is their main food. Because their digestive tracts extract little nutritive value from the plant, they consume enormous amounts, spending 50 to 75 percent of the day eating. A giant panda needs 20 kilos of bamboo a day, and he eats for about 15 hours!
Scientists are making a special study of the panda, its way of life, home, and food. They are also trying to breed pandas in new zoos, and to grow different kinds of bamboo in special natural reserves for pandas.
