O mundo passa hoje por grave crise de segurança alimentar e nutricional. Segundo dados do último relatório publicado pela FAO (Organização das Nações Unidas para Alimentação e Agricultura), entre 691 milhões e 783 milhões de pessoas enfrentam a fome, enquanto outros 2,4 bilhões sofrem de insegurança alimentar moderada ou grave. Isso equivale a quase 30% da população mundial. Ao mesmo tempo, mais da metade apresenta sobrepeso, e mais de 1 bilhão sofre de obesidade. O duplo fardo da má nutrição aponta para crise não apenas humanitária e de saúde, mas também social e econômica. Somos o quinto maior país em extensão territorial; o sétimo em população e o quarto maior produtor de alimentos do mundo. Podemos produzir mais, protegendo o meio ambiente. A agricultura tropical brasileira figura entre as mais eficientes, modernas e produtivas. Há pesquisas evidenciando que será a que mais deverá crescer nos próximos anos. Temos também uma onipresente agricultura familiar, que representa 77% dos estabelecimentos rurais do país e é responsável pela maior parte dos alimentos consumidos nos lares brasileiros. Fortalecer a agricultura familiar no Brasil e no mundo é um dos pilares de nossa atuação doméstica e internacional.
