Inmates have devised an innovative way to smuggle in mobile phones into a prison farm in Brazil – carrier pigeons. Guards at the Danilio Pinheiro prison near the southeastern city of Sorocaba noticed a pigeon resting on an electric wire with a small cloth bag tied to one of its legs last week. "The guards nabbed the bird after luring it down with some food and discovered components of a small cellphone inside the bag," police investigator Celso Soramiglio said. A day later, another pigeon was spotted dragging a similar bag inside the prison's exercise yard. Inside the bag was the mobile phone's charger, Soramiglio said. The birds were apparently bred and raised inside the prison, smuggled out, outfitted with the mobile phone parts and then released to fly back. "Pigeons instinctively fly back home, always," the investigator said. Soramiglio said that police have not discovered who raised the pigeons nor the name of the inmate who was going to receive the mobile phone, but that he hoped the telephone carrier would provide the information.

Brazil has come out of recession after its economy grew in the April-to-June quarter. The largest economy in Latin America expanded by 1.9% in the second quarter from the previous three months. Data also showed Sweden emerged from recession on Friday, a sign that economies are starting to recover from the global economic downturn. Other countries that have come out recession include the eurozone's largest economies, Germany and France. Japan, the world's second-largest economy, also grew by 0.6% 15 20 25 30 in the second quarter, less than the 0.9% growth the government initially estimated. Most countries have enacted large stimulus packages to pull themselves out of the slump. Brazil has poured money into large-scale public infrastructure projects, cut taxes on new cars and passed tax breaks on companies and individuals. The return to growth means that Brazil's recession was comparatively short, amounting to just two quarters of negative growth. The economy shrank by 1% in the first three months of 2009, a revision from the previously announced 0.8%, said statistics agency IBGE. In the last quarter of 2008, Brazil saw a contraction of 3.4%, itself a revision from an earlier figure of 3.8%. On Thursday, the Brazilian government said inflation had slowed in August, giving a total of 4.4% for the past 12 months. The rate is below the central bank's 2009 inflation target of 4.5%.

BODY WORLDS PLANS CADAVER SHOW DEDICATED TO SEX

German anatomists plan a new show dedicated solely to dead bodies having sex as part of the Body Worlds exhibitions. Gunther von Hagens and his wife Angelina Whalley show corpses prepared using a technique invented by von Hagens called "plastination," that removes water from specimens and preserves them with silicon rubber or epoxy resin. "It's not my intention to show certain sexual poses. My goal is really to show the anatomy and the function," Body Worlds creative director Whalley told Reuters in an interview, adding the sex exhibition may open next year. Body Worlds exhibitions, visited by 27 million people across the world, have been criticized for presenting entire corpses, stripped of skin to reveal the muscles and organs underneath, in lifelike and often the atrical positions. Von Hagens has already triggered uproar with a new exhibit which shows just two copulating corpses.
