E aqui não me refiro somente aos países que primam por ideologias nacionalistas ou étnicas ou fundamentalistas. Como veremos, a existência da nação moderna depende fortemente desse jogo de evocação do passado, cujas ferramentas principais são a memória e o esquecimento.

Nesse sentido, o passado transforma-se em uma narrativa não fixa, mas permeável por interesses do tempo presente. Ao (re)construirmos o passado de determinado povo, esquecemos e lembramos — conscientemente ou não — de determinados fatos, informações e interpretações. Dessa forma, damos voz a uma narrativa que se inscreve tanto no tempo histórico quanto no mítico. A batalha — a meu ver, perdida — de certos historiadores parece ser a de tentar escapar a esses tempos, reafirmando a ligação dos fatos históricos com uma Verdade e conferindo a outros acontecimentos uma suposta função inferior de fábulas ou mitos. Inventariar o passado torna-se, para esses estudiosos, tarefa árdua em que ainda está em jogo a busca de uma suposta autenticidade.
