Ethics for Educators

(July 27, 2020.)

Educators must commit wholly to the teaching profession itself. A classroom environment should promote safety, security, and acceptance, and should always avoid bullying, hostility, neglect, dishonesty or offensive conduct. Teachers must accurately describe their qualifications, licenses, and credentials to education boards or administration offices that look to hire them. Teachers must also fulfill all contracts, obey school policies, and account for all funds and resources at their disposal. It’s up to the teacher to design lesson plans to meet specific state standards and create a well-rounded education plan that appeals to learners of all backgrounds and abilities.

On top of fostering healthy relationships with students, educators must build strong relationships with school staff, parents, guidance counselors, coworkers, and administrators. Teachers must keep from discussing private information about colleagues and students unless disclosure is required under the law. Teachers should always avoid gossip of any kind, including false comments about coworkers or students. Part of the code of ethics requires teachers to cooperate with fellow teachers, parents, and administrators to create an atmosphere that fosters learning.

An educator’s code of conduct demands attentiveness to continuing education requirements and career development. Teachers must spend time researching new teaching methods, attend classes to maintain their certifications, consult colleagues for professional advice, stay informed on technical advancements for the classroom, and participate in curriculum improvements. A teacher must ensure that their teaching methods are relevant and comprehensive for all students. Teachers must engage in educational research to continuously improve their strategies in the classroom.

Virtual learning is something most of us, from parents to teachers to kids, never expected to need to do. Now that we’re in our second year of online schooling, it’s still not quite something most people have gotten used to doing yet. From struggling to juggle work Zooms with Google Classroom sessions, crafts to conference calls and eye strain from endless screens, it hasn’t been easy. But don’t feel bad if you feel like you’re barely keeping it together with distance learning, because most people are having a tough time now, too. Virtual learning memes will make you laugh, nod and know you aren’t alone in the struggle!

Collaborative Approaches To The Construction Of Knowledge And Building Communities Of Inquiry And Practice

Student demographics have been changing for some considerable time – more mature students, more students combining work and study, more students looking for flexible learning options. While school leavers are still an important segment of the college and university student body, they no longer are the dominant drivers of the strategies pursued by the institutions which look to broader markets, especially international markets.

From the early days of online learning, there was an emphasis on enabling students to construct knowledge through questioning, discussion, sharing of perspectives and sources, analysis of resources from multiple sources, and instructor feedback. Social media encouraged the development of communities of practice, where students share experiences, discuss theories and challenges, and learn from each other. The professor is no longer responsible for delivering all of the knowledge or even providing all of the sources for learning – but maintains a critical role as guide, facilitator, and assessor of the learning. However, most instructors have not experienced learning, much less teaching, in such collaborative environments, especially when facilitated through technology. It requires a reconsideration of roles, authority, and how learning is achieved and measured.

The most recent model of how this constructivist approach to teaching and learning can occur has been developed which gives emphasis to the idea that the “class” is a community engaged in a serious inquiry into a body of knowledge, guided by the teacher. Known as the community of inquiry model, it has garnered a lot of attention and is now an embedded idea in instructional design. It is built on a simple principle: the more engaged learners are with their learning, the more likely they are to be successful.

It is the view of the Committee that States parties must take all appropriate legislative, administrative and other measures for the realization and monitoring of the rights of adolescents to health and development as recognized in the Convention. To this end, States parties must notably fulfil the following obligations:

(a) To create a safe and supportive environment for adolescents, including within their family, in schools, in all types of institutions in which they may live, within their workplace and/or in the society at large;

(b) To ensure that adolescents have access to the information that is essential for their health and development and that they have opportunities to participate in decisions affecting their health (notably through informed consent and the right of confidentiality), to acquire life skills, to obtain adequate and age-appropriate information, and to make appropriate health behaviour choices;

(c) To ensure that health facilities, goods and services, including counselling and health services for mental and sexual and reproductive health, of appropriate quality and sensitive to adolescents’ concerns are available to all adolescents;

(d) To ensure that adolescent girls and boys have the opportunity to participate actively in planning and programming for their own health and development;

(e) To protect adolescents from all forms of labour which may jeopardize the enjoyment of their rights, notably by abolishing all forms of child labour and by regulating the working environment and conditions in accordance with international standards.

During the 1970s, the so-called audiolingual method, based on behaviorist and structuralist assumptions, was still considered the only scientific way of teaching a foreign language. Its emphasis on the oral skills and on the exhaustive repetition of structural exercises seemed to work well in the contexts of private language institutes. Those contexts were characterized by the gathering of small numbers of highly motivated students per class, a weekly time-table superior in the number of hours to the one adopted in regular schools, and plenty of audiovisual resources. Questionable in itself, both because of its results, which in time were revealed to be less efficient than believed, especially in terms of fluency, and its theoretical assumptions, the method ended up being adopted by regular schools due to its positive reputation at the time.

From the 1980s on, with the spread of ideas connected to the so-called communicative approach and the growth of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), the community of researchers and teachers interested in the context of regular schools started reviewing the assumptions and logic of English Language Teaching (ELT). Recognizing that each and every school discipline needs to justify its presence in the curriculum socially and educationally, this movement identified the skill of reading as the most relevant one for the students attending the majority of Brazilian regular schools. This movement reached its climax with the publication of the Brazilian National Curricular Parameters (PCN) for the teaching of foreign languages at basic education level by the end of the 1990s. The document recommended the focus on the teaching of reading within a view of language as discourse. However, it did not close the door on the teaching of any other skill, as long as the context made it possible and relevant.

It is important at this point to clarify a few things about the emergence of this educational policy. First of all, it was not formulated apart from the community of teachers and researchers and then imposed upon them. On the contrary, great names in Brazilian Applied Linguistics, such as Luiz Paulo da Moita Lopes and Maria Antonieta Celani among others, were involved in the formulation of the Parameters. Even more important than that, a lot of teachers, individually or collectively, with or without supervision, were already trying the focus on reading as an alternative to the failure of previous practices before the Parameters were elaborated.
