The basic premise of this method was that second language learning should be more like first language learning - lots of oral interaction, spontaneous use of the language, no translation between first and second languages, and little analysis of grammatical rules.

This method has a focus on grammatical rules, memorization of vocabulary and of various declensions and conjugations translations of texts, doing written exercises.

This method is based on teaching learners directly (without translation), and conceptually (without grammatical rules and explanations) a “series” of connected sentences that are easy to perceive.

Characteristic of these courses is a great deal of oral activity - pronunciation and pattern drills and conversation practice - with virtually none of grammar and translation.

According to this method, people are capable of learning much more than they give themselves credit for. The human brain can process great quantities of material if given the right conditions for learning, among which are a state of relaxation and given over of control to the teacher.
