| Things that work for me: watch a DVD on my computer (or portable DVD player) with noise cancelling headphones. Reducing the noise from the outside (people talking, children screaming, engines) reduces stress. Being so close to a movie helps you focus more on the screen than your surroundings. Listen in on air traffic control conversations. United Airlines has this channel and I’ve found hearing the captain continuously, knowing where other planes are, what kind of turbulence is expected etc. helps quite a bit. As another person commented, nap through it. Get a soft Bucky Bean Neck pillow so you can actually sleep comfortably. And if all that fails, there’s always anti-anxiety medication. |

| Take a Flying Lesson - I was a miserable flier (took many cups of ‘courage’ and even then was white knuckled) till I took, of all things, flying lessons in a small plane. Seeing how things work, and experiencing some ‘bumpiness’ made the experience of a large jet seem very calm. I enjoy flying now! Truly. |

| A small thought. - Thank you for your tip, Rob! That was very helpful, indeed. I realized that people often get nervous and so anxious because as they sit on their seat for hours, they think of how high they are, the [very few] crashes that have occurred, the terrorism, etc. But they do not realize how secure and calm it is for the driver. It’s almost like driving a car, only more serene-like. Fact has it that you are more likely to get killed in a car crash than in a plane. Here are some of my tips: *Don’t think about how high above you are. *Bring a CD player to take your mind off of your phobia. *Close the window shield and pretend you are riding in a car. *Think serene, peaceful thoughts to help the car idea. *Think from the point of view of the serene pilot, calmly navigating with experience to your destination. And best of all... *Breathe in and out calmly, relax and enjoy the small entertainment they provide for you there. I hope this info served the rest of you well! Take care! Há um frenesi de velocidade no ar e muita gente já está ficando sufocada com esse novo tipo de poluição. Ser cada vez mais rápido se tornou uma obsessão quase que neurótica na sociedade consumista atual. É o nosso computador que tem de ser mais veloz e, portanto, mais potente. É o celular que tem de ser trocado por ofertas mais tentadoras. Plantas que começam a produzir frutos em questão de semanas. Milhares de hectares de florestas são desmatados em apenas alguns dias pelos correntões dos tratores de esteira. Eficiência hoje é mais produção no menor tempo possível, para mais consumo e mais lucro. Até o nosso presidente, diante dessa crise financeira atual, está-nos aconselhando a consumir mais, já que isso significa mais emprego.
Sabemos que os sentimentos não podem conviver com o efêmero, nem com o fugidio. As nossas amizades, valores, crenças e os prazeres da alma são construídos de modo necessariamente lento. Por outro lado é sabido que todos nós gostamos de consumir, mas esse consumismo desbragado liberou, de modo tão exagerado, as amarras do desejo, esse sujeito ansioso, eternamente insatisfeito, que só se fala em busca, desapego e troca-troca interminável. Essas coisas passam longe do amor que é encontro, cuidado e merecimento. É certo que desejo e amor são partes constitutivas do humano, mas só o equilíbrio, que é a sábia opção do meio termo, poderia tornar a vida mais dignificante.
O mundo da pressa desgasta nossos valores maiores e dilacera o paciente e delicado tecido amoroso, que é feito com muita persistência, alegria, renúncia e doações. O mundo dos afetos não passa pela regulagem dos megabits, nem pelas trocas periódicas, ele é sabiamente vagaroso no seu desenvolver. Ele se sustenta nos pilares das coisas que não mudam assim tão facilmente. Estas coisas são os valores que nós perenizamos através das memórias e que comemoramos com o prazer da alma. É em homenagem a eles que fazemos as festas e algumas são muito especiais. A festa natalina, por exemplo, significa o nascimento da esperança em Jesus e o Ano Novo exprime a morte do velho e o nascimento de um novo tempo.
